Best Things Today:
November 8, 2022
1. Been a while since my morning view was a close-up of a fuzzy squirrel belly! They’re quite adept at getting seeds out of the “squirrel-proof” feeders. I have heard over and over from nature folks that nothing’s really squirrel-proof, just kind of slightly less easy for the squirrels. I do hope some researchers somewhere are studying squirrel intelligence because it strikes me that they are clever little bastards. 😝
2. Beautiful rainbow on my writing work this afternoon. Writing this month is going crappily, although I’m not behind (or if I am it’s only a few hundred words) for the date, but it’s hard and everything I’m writing is garbage and … Come to think of it, this is exactly how it goes each and every November, so I guess I’m exactly on target for the month? It’s all crap but I always finish so it’ll be fine. A podcast I listened to today was briefly touching on writer’s block and the two people both mentioned versions of “usually a sign that you haven’t done enough of the pre-work/reading/research/put in the time/effort…” and … well. … 😳 Why do they have to call me out like that?? So I’m trying to prioritize more reading but BOY HOWDY my focus for reading has declined dramatically in the last few years. I do a lot of reading of audiobooks while I do other things, but reading on paper is just a metric ton harder than it used to be. I need to rethink how I’m arranging my tasks each day because I probably should be trying to push reading earlier in the day rather than the thing I do when “everything else is done” (ha ha ha. lolsob. So, never, then.) Earlier in the day = better focus.
3. The climate stuff out of the UN this week has me extra freaked out. 😕 And I tried to look at election results tonight but quickly hit the nope nope nopety nope nope stage (no specific issues, I just hit overwhelm FAST where I used to have attention span and interest in the details.) However, our natural environment where we live is still beautiful and this unseasonably mild weather well into November has been a welcome bonus (even if the foreboding music still plays in my head when I enjoy another 65+ degree day in November…) and the sandhills are still chillin in our park and delighting me and there’s a bunny who lives under the cedar tree in the front yard and is *very stupid* and also cute and fluffy and the squirrels are getting *very fat* and also milkweed seed spreading season is fun, etc. etc. So maybe the world is melting? But my yard squirrels are fat and I’m doing a whole lot to help Mother Nature and trying with my whole soul to feel the gifts she gives. Guys, some days it’s a struggle. It’s okay. One day at a time.
