1. Youngest exclaimed with delight at some point while making dinner with me, “ooh it’s a pretty sunset” and so she took over stirring the tofu and let me go outside to see it. AND THEN when I got back in she asked ME to take over with the tofu so she could go out and see it. ❤ 🌅 I consider my work as a parent done at this point. They also know to say “hawk!” If they see a hawk and “ooh!” If I point out a hawk and “Where?” If I say I see the sandhills. 🙂 In other words, my children are marvelous people who indulge me and maybe possibly have learned some finding small joys/delights/best things skills at home. How marvelous!
2. Youngest also noticed the starbucks coupon and so when I was out taking care of something I wandered through a starbucks for 50% off cold drinks after noon on Wednesdays (this week and next. ❤ Coupon is in the app. 😀 Sometimes apps are amazing even though every time you turn around (or open an app) there’s an app update. And no I don’t use automatic updates because I like having battery bars on my phone, 😝 and also IT’S NOT THE BOSS OF ME.) ANYWAY so you know how one of my small delights is a starbucks cake pop? Often these are my small treat for myself when flying solo. Today, though, I was able to bring back a cake pop (birthday cake flavor is the best flavor. Fight me.) for each kid and they were each delighted by the random midday treat, too. ❤
3. I assisted eldest in taking his kittens for their first checkup and some more kitten vaccinations. Many conversations about how expensive having pets is, what kinds of food is best, etc. We’re doing more kittens on parade time at home and looks like I’m going to have some hummingbird feeder watching helpers. 🐦 🐱🤨
And it was a particular delight to find Calypso had pre-installed herself into my spot on the couch.
She tolerated some humans joining her later, and then moved off to a different spot just in time for my usual evening couch buddy, Kit, to meander over. Kit has reluctantly agreed that sure these small pounce-y cats seem to be sticking around. But she still comes to me each evening for our purr therapy time, even though she’s been semi-avoiding the kitten meet and greets. I think we’ve reached a good equilibrium, though I’m sure there will still be some misunderstandings in our future. Tonight Kit is on my lap snoozing away, and Calypso is on the other side of the couch conked out on a pile of blankets sleeping her new immunizations off. Merlin didn’t get the memo and did zoomies all evening before being carted off to bed by the Eldest, lol. Since they will be moving with him to grad school in a few weeks he’s going to keep the kittens in his room for meals and sleeping, which will help our cranky old cats have some kitten-free hours every day, too. Anyway, these are just logistics, I’m mainly using this space to brain dump about kitten and cat acclimation. The real delight is OMG KITTENS ARE SO CUTE. There’s a reason they show up in songs, the entire internet came into being in order to share cat memes (and find out if the coffee pot was full or empty, too) and why writers talk about the joy of kittens. It’s really quite something and I think everyone should have the chance to be with kittens sometimes. They are filled with endless delight like how Calypso looks like an anime character
and Merlin is so adventurous and daring
and tried to eat Eldest’s ice cream right out from under him tonight which involved him getting ice cream behind his ear (the cat, not the human, though that may have also happened to the human) and both will stick their faces into coffee mugs “just looking” and the way they jump their back legs sideways a bit while their back arches in a play fight. How they’ll stop in the middle of almost anything to urgently lick that one spot on their leg. Endlessly delightful. I’ll miss them when they’re away with Eldest. ❤ He’s of course as happy as can be, making beds on his desk for his gaming buddies and sending me snaps of how he can’t see his computer screen for all the kitten ears. 🐱 📺
